Community

"Sangha" is the Sanskrit term for "community of practitioners"— one of the three jewels of Buddhism. The Tucson Shambhala Meditation Group is home to a wonderfully diverse community who share a genuine connection to contemplative practice and the aspiration to realize a more wakeful, sane society. Members and friends are welcome to attend celebrations, practice events, meetings and gatherings of special interest groups.

The Shambhala Meditation Center is part of an international community of over 170 meditation centers founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and led by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. The Shambhala Buddhist path, unique in the world of Western Buddhism, combines the teachings of the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism with the Shambhala view of living an uplifted life, fully engaged with the world.

Community Events

During the year, we sponsor community events -- gatherings to celebrate our sangha and opportunities for sangha members to share their interests.  Shambhala Day marks the beginning of the New Year, and represents one of the most important traditions of Shambhala Buddhism.  On the spring equinox, we join other Tucson Buddhist centers to celebrate International Buddhist Day, a time to celebrate being Buddhist. The Shambhala Arts Festival provides an opportunity to gather artists and help establish the roots of enlightened society. Children's Day marks the winter solstice and gives us an opportunity to express appreciation for and with our children.

Community Meetings

Every two months the community gathers to share ideas and information regarding the needs of our sangha.  The Tucson Shambhala Council uses this information to plan teachings and programs to meet the group's practice and education needs.  Please email agenda items. To read minutes from community meetings, the Adobe Acrobat Reader is required. To download the free Reader, click here.  Here is a copy of the minutes from the last meeting, which was held August 19, 2007:
